Half round gutter has been around seemingly forever, and is still used on some styles of homes. 5” and 6” are the normal gutter sizes and 3” and 4” round corrugated are common for the downspouts. It's important that the downspouts be corrugated, because of the ice buildup that can occur. The corrugations allow the metal to expand during these times. Currently there are two choices of material, bare galvanized and copper. Galvanized gutter is usually made from 26 gage and the downspouts are made from 28 gage. Copper 16 ounce is used for 5” gutter and all sizes of downspouts. The 6” gutter is made with 16 or 20 ounce, with 20 ounce being the most popular. Half round gutter is installed using either wrap-around hangers or fascia mount brackets. Both types are visible from the ground.
